But one buzz word has been attracting more attention than most: \u201cmodularity.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.kpmg.com\/content\/dam\/kpmg\/pdf\/2016\/04\/SmartConstructionReport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">Studies show<\/span><\/a> embracing this particular change can have a positive effect where it matters most\u2014the bottom line. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOf the total cost that construction firms spend on materials, 35 percent of their spend is considered waste,\u201d said Jason Vetterick, VP of Construction Markets at Airgas. \u201cGoing modular is one way to reduce that number.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Once upon a time, construction projects mainly fell into two camps: conventional and modular. The former refers to structures that are built where they will stand; the latter constructed off-site then eventually moved to its permanent location. Conventional projects might reign supreme in the United States (for now), but modular has taken off in Europe and Asia and had some pretty stunning ends. For example, the towering 57-story J57 Mini Sky City tower in China was erected in less than three weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To put that in perspective: the construction of London\u2019s 37-story <a href=\"https:\/\/skygarden.london\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cWalkie Talkie\u201d tower<\/span><\/a> took almost five years using conventional methods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With big name suppliers and contractors moving toward modular sites, it doesn\u2019t appear to be going away anytime soon. In fact, it\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/uabuildersgroup.com\/blog\/5-trends-shaping-global-construction-in-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">gaining momentum in 2018<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Is modularity right for your project?<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Contractors are under more pressure than ever to complete projects on budget in increasingly shorter timeframes\u2014usually with fewer resources. A successful project requires foresight, long-term planning and thoughtful engineering, meaning there\u2019s less margin for error. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Modularity has been shown to not only be more cost efficient, but also offers many time-saving opportunities: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">* In an industry that\u2019s challenged by skilled labor shortages, construction businesses can contract pieces from multiple markets, rendering any geographical labor shortage obsolete.&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">* When successfully executed, a modular approach can be replicated, leading to even shorter lead times on projects.
