Mogensen, an industrial engineer and industry consultant that\nintroduced the work simplification process to the world in the 1930s. Since\nthen, it\u2019s been a business mantra that promotes productivity and efficiencies\nin the workplace\u2014especially when it comes to lean\nmanufacturing, which is instilled within a company when management works toward\na plan to eliminate wasted resources, money and time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>A brief history of\nlean manufacturing <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The basic ideology behind lean manufacturing was brought to\nus by one of the country\u2019s founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin. In his essay, \u201cThe\nWay to Wealth,\u201d featured in <em>Poor\nRichard\u2019s Almanac<\/em>, Franklin shared advice about carrying unneeded inventory\nand how avoiding unnecessary costs could make your company even more money than\nincreasing prices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Years later, we\u2019ve expanded upon the ideas of Mogensen and\nFranklin. Companies all over the world strive to follow Mogensen\u2019s motto by\ngaining efficiencies as well as cutting operating costs via a lean\nmanufacturing process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a National Supply Chain Manager for Airgas, an Air Liquide\ncompany, Andy Nugent works alongside shop supervisors every day to execute strategic\nlean manufacturing plans that drive success. Nugent believes there are three\nareas where lean manufacturing can truly make a difference and help your\ncompany quickly reduce waste and unnecessary costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Removing\nstock issues<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re noticing consistent and untimely inventory issues such as stock outages or frequent and delayed orders or shipments, it might be time to consider a strategic change.  Consider the following: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>High-level observances:  <\/strong>What does your process look like and where do you think your company can improve?  <\/li><li><strong>Current supply chain: <\/strong>Are employees frequently coming to you to ask for more tools or safety equipment? <\/li><li><strong>Time management:<\/strong> Do you find yourself focusing on products you need instead of actual production? <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Answering yes to any of these questions raises the flag that stock\nissues do indeed exist and a lean manufacturing plan can help turn your processes\naround for the better. A deeper evaluation of current procedures can pinpoint\nvulnerabilities and areas where lean manufacturing can realize cost and time savings.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Reducing chaos\n<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most common circumstances that contributes to workplace\nchaos includes lack of organization with product inventory and orders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A tactical delivery schedule could reduce waste of product and\nmoney if your company is experiencing any of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The need to issue multiple purchase orders\neach week<\/li><li>Making emergency delivery orders (typically\nfor safety products)<\/li><li>Ordering product in very high quantities once\nor twice per year <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Nugent recommends a strategic stocking program if your delivery\nschedule (or lack thereof) is keeping you up at night. He suggests, \u201cRather\nthan having employees wandering around the shop floor looking for a part they\nneed to do their job, it\u2019s very helpful to set up a program where product is\nshipped regularly and inventory is organized and managed per location. Once you\neliminate stock outages as well as time and energy spent procuring those\nproducts, you should see a positive and swift change in your work environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Taking\ncontrol of the situation<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>All supervisors are looking for an element of organization and\nhealthy control when managing inventory and product. Additionally, many find\nthemselves considering how they can become more efficient and cost conscious\nwithin this area. Nugent wants supervisors to know that having a plan in place\ncan make them the superhero of the business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nugent believes, \u201cThe process starts at the end user, the person\nwho\u2019s doing the work. For example, when an employee needs a piece of safety\nequipment, they might first go to a supervisor to make the request and then they\nare given the item they need. This is a common scenario where a company would\nbenefit from streamlining the process with something like a vending machine on\nthe work floor. This way, the first employee could have easily gotten the item right\nthen and there because the supervisor has put a lean manufacturing process into\nplay.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>As an\nadded bonus, you can reduce stress<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like relying on electricity when you plug something into an\noutlet, you can rely on your shipment to be there on time to stock your vending\nmachine or other type of system you choose. Choosing the right supplier can\nensure stock is there on time in accordance with the service plan you agreed\nupon. Clutter and wasted time are eliminated when you have a strong lean\nmanufacturing process in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rethinking your work processes can seem daunting and is easy to\nput off; however, evaluating business stock issues, chaos and efficiencies (or\ninefficiencies) is imperative if a business needs to course correct and desires\nto take advantage of the benefits of lean manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><p>By adopting a lean manufacturing model\nand executing on a strong program, your company can experience a sense of\nsecurity and ease.
