You started with a\npristine surface. Your stick out is at the perfect length. You\u2019ve even got a\ncylinder of the right gas blend for the job. But for some reason, your welds\ncontinue to look like an old rope that Jackson Pollock tried to paint silver. But,\nby all accounts, this weld should be perfect, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fred Schweighardt, Advanced Fabrication Project Leader and\nInternational Expert at Airgas, an Air Liquide company, says the answer may lie\nin your pre-mixed gas cylinder. Chances are, Schweighardt suggests, your gas\nblend wasn&#8217;t mixed properly\u2014and that blend might not be as spot on as you think\nit is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Gas separation: A\ngateway to improper mixing <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two main factors that lead to improper mixing. The\nfirst is an incorrect quantity of gases added during the filling process. This\ncan happen in manual pressure and temperature fill plants if the operator is\nnot diligent. The second most common problem is using a cylinder that does not\nhave the appropriate filling hardware installed. This makes it almost\nimpossible to get the proper mix during the fill process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf a cylinder is not set up properly and the gases are not added\nin the correct order and quantity, a poorly mixed cylinder is almost a certainty,\u201d\nsays Schweighardt. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Improperly mixed\ngases cause numerous problems<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Improperly mixed gases can lead to a variety of quality\nconcerns. Carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) in excess of the parameters that were\ndesigned for a certain gas mix can lead to significant spatter and poor\npenetration, which, in turn, lead to excessive labor costs associated with\ncleanup and rework. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Schweighardt, \u201cHigh CO<sub>2 <\/sub>effectively\nlowers the voltage, which can result in a high, ropey bead shape and reduced\nsidewall penetration in the weld joint. These weld defects are both aesthetic\nand structural concerns that compromise the quality of the finished product.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>On-site mixers to the\nrescue<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To improve accuracy, reliability and efficiency, consider\non-site mixing. An accurate gas mix can prevent improperly mixed gas from\ntaking welding parameters outside of specification. \u201cFor any mixer to be\naccurate, it is necessary that the gas pressure leading into the mixing unit\nitself is carefully controlled. Even pressure differences of 2 or 3 psi can\neasily cause a gas mix to be significantly out of specification,\u201d says\nSchweighardt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The right mixer should also be highly reliable. To ensure\nmaximum reliability, look for a mixer that has a minimal amount of moving parts\nand minimize the number of electrically controlled or driven components. \u201cUptime\nis the key metric for the reliability of a mixer,\u201d notes Schweighardt. \u201cWe\ndefine the uptime as not only the fact that the mixer is functioning, but also\nthe extreme accuracy of the mix, which eliminates wasted time tracking down\nwelding problems.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A mixer that is both accurate and reliable increases efficiency. According to Schweighardt, \u201cUsing an on-site mixer can reduce the amount of <g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\">labor<\/g> required for at least two reasons. First, if you are using compressed gas for welding, you could recover all of the cylinder changeout <g class=\"gr_ gr_8 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace\" id=\"8\" data-gr-id=\"8\">labor<\/g> that you spend.
